How to Measure for Curtains

-- If possible fit the pole or track before measuring. This ensures greater accuracy.

-- Use a metal tape measure. Fabric tape measures can stretch, affecting the measurements.

-- All measurements in cm please.

-- There are only two measurements needed, the track or pole width and the curtain drop.

-- The information below is for standard gathering heading tapes. For all other heading tapes please contact us and we'll be happy to talk you through the measuring process.

There are two measurements you need to make, the width of the track / pole and the drop or length of the curtains


How to Measure the Track or Pole Width

Please supply the measurements for both A and B.

Measure between the finials at either end of the pole.


How to Measure the Curtain Drop

Decide where you want the bottom of the curtains to drop to.


This is usually to the window sill (A), between the sill and the top of the radiator (B), or the floor (C). Look at the 'hook drop' section below



There are 2 measurements that make up the total curtain drop, the Heading Height and the Hook Drop.

1. Heading Height

-- This is the distance between the top of the curtain and the curtain hooks.

-- For a curtain track this is either to the top of the track or just above.

-- For a pole this is either to above or below the pole depending on whether you want the pole to show.

-- As a guide, for a standard 3'' heading tape this usually ranges between 1cm and 6cm.

1. Hook Drop

-- This is the distance between the curtain hooks and the very bottom of the curtain, be it the window sill (A), between the sill and the top of the radiator (B), or the floor (C).

-- To the sill (A): measure from the curtain hooks to 1cm above the sill.

-- To between the sill and the top of the radiator (B): measure from the curtain hooks to either 5-20cm below the sill or 2cm above the radiator.

-- To the floor (C): measure from the curtain hooks to 1cm above the floor.

-- If you have a draughty window or door you may wish to 'pool' the curtains on the floor. If so add an extra 10-20cm to the floor measurement (C).
